Fact-Checking & Correction Policy

Our Commitment to Accuracy

The Palm Beach District ARES (PBD ARES) is committed to publishing information that is accurate, reliable, and useful for our members, partner agencies, and the public. We understand the critical nature of emergency communications, and we strive to ensure all information on this website is trustworthy.

This policy outlines our fact-checking process for new content and our transparent procedure for correcting any errors that may be published.

Our Fact-Checking Process

All content published on this website is subject to review by PBD ARES leadership. As a public service organization, our “fact-checking” is a process of verification against primary, authoritative sources. We do not publish rumors, unconfirmed reports, or personal opinions presented as fact.

Our standards for verification include:

  • Partner Agency Information: All safety, weather, or emergency response information is verified against official publications from our partner agencies (e.g., FEMA, the National Weather Service, American Red Cross).
  • Organizational Standards: All technical information, operating procedures, and radio-specific content are verified against official documentation from the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) and PBD ARES internal standards.
  • Event and Scheduling: All meeting times, net schedules, and public service event details are confirmed by the event coordinators or PBD ARES leadership.
  • Expert Review: Content is written and reviewed by licensed amateur radio operators with experience in emergency communications.

Our Correction Policy

We are committed to transparency and accountability. While we strive for perfect accuracy, we acknowledge that mistakes can happen. When errors are identified, we will correct them promptly and clearly.

We distinguish between two types of corrections:

  1. Major Errors (Corrections)This includes factual inaccuracies that significantly impact the meaning or understanding of a piece of content. Examples include an incorrect date for an emergency net, a wrong technical specification, or a misstatement of official policy.
    • Action: For major errors, we will update the content and add a clear “Correction:” notice at the bottom of the page. This notice will state the date of the correction and what was changed.
  2. Minor Errors (Updates)This includes spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, broken links, or minor typos that do not alter the factual meaning of the content.
    • Action: We may correct these minor errors directly in the text (in-situ) without a formal correction notice.
